Program #3: Summer Adaptive Sailing at the Canandaigua Yacht Club
Adaptive Sailing: The OASIS Adaptive Sailing Program began in June, 2010, in partnership with the Canandaigua Yacht Club. The club allows us to use their waterfront facilities and some of their members allow us to use their boats for sailing lessons. All OASIS sailing instructors are US Sailing certified and follow the US Sailing criteria to teach a course which will allow the participants to work towards a keelboat sailing certification. To receive this certification, a student must pass both a written and a practical (on the water) exam.
Sailing lessons typically start in early June and last throughout the summer. Lessons are taught either in the morning, or afternoon, Monday through Friday, and include rigging and de-rigging the boat and at least a couple hours of sailing time on the water. Lunch is provided either before, or after, each lesson. Each vet is encouraged to bring a companion (spouse, other relative, good friend) to learn to sail along with him/her; it just makes it more fun that way. It's expected that it will take 8-10 lessons to gain enough knowledge and skill to achieve the certification requirements. If a vet chooses not to go for certification, he/she can still participate to learn the basics of sailing a keelboat. "Graduation" is determined by the input from the instructor(s), the student, and any other involved volunteers.
